The Scoop on CBD and Anxiety

What does the research say?


The research on CBD and its effects on anxiety are ongoing, but some of the findings in early and recent studies are confirming what many CBD proponents have been describing for decades: CBD has been shown to reduce stress in animals (including humans).

Anxiety comes in many shapes and sizes, and studies have been performed focusing on a variety of these disorders including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to name a few.

The National Center for Biotechnology Information said in a 2015 study that “Overall, current evidence indicates CBD has considerable potential as a treatment for multiple anxiety disorders, with need for further study of chronic and therapeutic effects in relevant clinical populations.”


What if I have regular, everyday anxiety that’s not classified as a disorder?

Many of us have learned (or attempted to learn) coping mechanisms for relatively low-level anxiety, like yoga, meditation, deep breathing, journaling, exercise, diet, or seeing a therapist. However, many of us also still struggle with keeping our anxiety at bay, and may suffer from related sleep problems. While published research has been scant due to federal regulations, and most large studies have focused on more extreme anxiety disorders, there is overwhelming anecdotal evidence that CBD helps relieve “common” anxiety.

Ready for good news?

Medical News Today says that while smoking marijuana has shown some potential negative side effects (focused primarily on the mode of intake, ie: smoking), “studies into cannabidiol [CBD] specifically, however, have found few or no negative side effects.” There are scores of CBD companies with thousands of positive reviews that tout the benefits of their products as remedies for everyday anxiety and stress, and while a wealth of peer reviewed studies have yet to be published, there are countless stories of relief to be heard.
